After a nice, long weekend for Thanksgiving break, the Cubs returned this week to a busy schedule as the Winter sports season began in full. The soccer team was one of the most successful teams on campus last year and have picked up right where they left off. The Varsity team is now 3-1 in the season with two quality wins this week over Campbell Hall and La Cañada. In last night's thriller over the Spartans, the Cubs twice surrendered the lead before finally clinching the game on a Kaitlyn Gomez ’23 PK, to win 3-2. The JV team continued their historic run—the JV Cubs soccer team has not lost a match since Feb. 6, 2020—a string of 19 matches in a row! Mayfield defeated La Canada last night with two second half goals from Emily Parry ’24 and Julieanna Navarro ’24 to beat the Spartans 2-0. Both teams host FSHA at Occidental on Tuesday in their annual Rivalry Series matchup!
The water polo team has played very competitive matches with Temple City, South Pasadena, and West Covina, but yesterday the Cubs picked up their first win of the year, 4-3, in a very tight match with Glendale. Etienne Lanchantin ’26 played very well for Mayfield and the Cubs got just enough scoring to improve to 1-2 on the season. The Cubs will compete in the Saddleback Invitational this weekend before they have two big matches next week—the Prep League opener with Flintridge Prep on Tuesday and a Rivalry Series match with FSHA next Friday night.
The Varsity basketball team is competing in the San Marino Tournament this week. Last night the Cubs played one of the best teams in all of southern California in their loss to Orangewood Academy. Today the Cubs are back at it in the Bronze Division Semifinals when they take on Bishop Conaty Loretto at 3:30 at Poly. The JV team has had off from games this week but the JV Cubs will be back in action on Tuesday with a non-league game against Roosevelt.
The games are a little colder these days, but the girls still love it when they have fans in the stands. Get dressed in red and make your way out to a game to cheer on the Cubs! The athletic calendar on the website is always up to date.
And finally, don’t forget that tomorrow is Christmas Tree Pickup Day. We will be down in the Lower Lot 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., where you will be able to pick up all the trees, wreaths and garlands you ordered. And if you want to cheer on the USA team tomorrow morning, we will be having a soccer watch party in Pike Auditorium for the USMNT's World Cup (Round 16) match with the Netherlands. Game time is 7:00 a.m.!
